About the role

Reporting to the 2nd Engineer, you will assist to maximize the distribution of Holcim (New Zealand) cement products by ensuring the safe and efficient operation and upkeep of the mv Buffalo hull, plant and equipment.

Holcim New Zealand operates the mv Buffalo, a 9000t dead weight bulk cement carrier, that operates primarily on the New Zealand coast. It is used as the primary distribution of cement from the import terminal to across the New Zealand wide depots network.

Main Responsibilities

  • Stand Engine Room watches as required as Engineer of the watch or act as duty Engineer
  • Undertake maintenance, both preventative and reactive on the ships machinery, cargo equipment and hull as required
  • Providing professional, proficient, accurate and prudent advice to the Chief & 2nd Engineer regarding marine engineering issues on-board the ship. 
  • Meeting daily with the 2nd Engineer on priority according to sea going duties, cargo loading and discharge schedules, plant and equipment repair, replacement and maintenance lists.
  • Assist 2nd Engineer to manage the onboard stores holding and make recommendations to the on inventory and recommended stock holding.  Manage the ships computerized stores inventory database.
  • Assist in lock out procedures.
  • Identifying and contributing to operational improvement and cost efficiencies through process and system improvements.
  • Actively taking  part of team in developing  JHA’s,Tool box meetings and Safety discussions

About you

  • Passion for safety - previous employment in a zero harm environment
  • Hold a minimum of a Marine Engineer Class 3 certificate (MEC 3) of competency, recognized in New Zealand
  • Happy to work in a hands on role
  • Preferably have a trade trained background
  • Required to relieve as 3rd Engineer or higher if holding required qualifications 
  • Strong verbal and written communication
  • Motived self starter with the ability to better him/herself to enable them to progress
  • Manages Execution, Customer Focus, Drives Change and Innovation & Leads for Performance
  • Communication / Engages and Inspires / Develops Human Capital / Cultivates Relationships and Networks / Fosters Teamwork and Cooperation
  • Strong IT - Word, Excel, SAP ideally / Experience in Amos Maintenance System preferable but not a pre requisite.
  • Hold a full Class 1 Driving Licence
